MKV – Stands for Matroska video files is the Matroska container format. Today it is usually video files, as well as those containing audio (movies) or video. MKV is similar in conception to other containers like AVI, MP4 or ASF.
Some famous movies avi format can be used as follows reason:
Your player software / open source tools
Support for almost any codec.
Quality-GUI wiser, and more tools for Muxing idiot-proof.
Due to these reasons, the MKV format became popular, especially in the movie websites downloads.
Looking for a way to turn MKV to MP4 iPod, you already have this kind of video files. As the movie downloaded from iTunes are protected and appears in WMV format.
I found a solution guide on ubuntuforums:
First install mkvextract, mkvinfo, MP4Box, HexEdit and mplayer
$ Sudo Apt-get install mplayer mkvtoolnix HexEdit gpac
Then you need neroAacEnc. Unpack linux directory, chmod + x neroAacEnc and copied to a location of your choice (Whitin the path)
I downloaded Heroes Season 2 episode 11, which as the name of the file: Heroes_S02E11_720p.mkv (and yes, this is legal in Norway!)
Then you have to find clues contains the audio and video.
Run:
$ Mkvinfo Heroes_S02E11_720p.mkv
Check out the impression of getting the tracks.
(in my archive Track1 avi video and audio is on track 2. Change the numbers to fit you mkv)
Then demux the mkvfile running:
$ Mkvextract tracks 1: video.h264 2: audio.ac3
Next to do is change one byte inside the video.h264.
$ HexEdit video.h264
Turning on the first line should see this combination of numbers:
"67 64 00 33"
change this to:
"67 64 00 29"
press Ctrl-s to save and Ctrl-Z to exit
Then you need to convert AAC audio.
Audiodump.wav $ mkfifo
$ NeroAacEnc-ignorelength-Q 0.20-if audiodump.wav of audio.m4a & audio.ac3 mplayer-vc null-vo null-ao pcm: fast
This may take a couple of minutes.
The only thing left is to mux the video file and audio:
$ MP4Box-add-add video.h264 Heroes_S02E11.mp4 audio.m4a
Everything should be completed within 5 minutes, because it makes no video conversion.
Sounds complicated! I I have not tried.
