Computer Security and You!
Did you close the doors and windows when going to work this morning?
Part 3: Data and Hardware / elimination Media
Giving computers and hardware This article does not address the data protection law etc. It is the proper disposal of the information contained in the hardware and media.
We have all heard tell the stories where computers have been completed in Africa and elsewhere and the data still been on the machines. This is bad, but very common. I have often worked on computers that people have acquired the companies when the company upgraded, often the information is left on the PC, in one form or another (I will not go into the implications license).
Often a PC leaves a company to have had the deleted data, applications and operating systems are left.
The truth is that most of the data remains. This is due to the fact that the removal process on a PC typically only removes a reference to an operating system file (with invisible file instead of deleting). Anyone with the right software you can get a lot of new data in seconds.
Sometimes disks are formatted and installed operating system with applications, again on the disc. Again, much of the data can still be recovered, basically everything what has not been overwritten.
When giving a PC or hard drive, USB or otherwise, which must completely remove the data. This usually requires software overwrite all data several times with random patterns of information. A good system will overwrite the areas of making a disk data recovery impossible, even hardware tools.
Why do this?
Privacy, prevent crime and they have a duty to protect other data you store.
The software to do this is cheap, 20 pounds or less, and worth the money.
Here is an example of a case where a company had not done …
A medical research company had been an employee of a PC, which then left the company. The IT manager of this company had formatted the computer and re-installed software – Allegedly!
The guy called me because he had created a document long, accidentally deleted.
I put the hard drive on a machine that was already loaded with software tools for recovery, I used a package software costing less than £ 40. I set the software that runs and made a cup of tea, came back to the PC which contained from time to delete files, which he wanted and all investigations and safety records of the company that originally had their PC. What's more, in connection with very, could restore and read most of the data.
Do you know that all your data?
Have you ever seen the television series of 24 in Sky as intellectually challenging and facts as Bugs Bunny!
In such programs you watch the authorities arrive at a company and the suspect presses a button and disappears of data.
What nonsense!
Any person or business that boasts regular backups would never stored in the same PC / Server that the original data and often (good practice) a backup taken offsite regularly. Let's face it, a super villain with a software program file that can take over the world and make the U.S. authorities running in circles, would not have done more than one copy of the file.
Take a sheet of the super villains book, keep backups!
That said, watch the backups, data backup may contain more data that the systems live data now deleted for example, but that data could still be of value to someone, it is valuable to you – or if he had not backed up.
You must know where their data, how secure it is and what is the most recent copy, any company with a Business Continuity Plan should know the facts they need to activate the plan etc.
People forget how valuable and how the data involved in the backup media, many companies have no control in place for the disposal of backup media, I've seen old tapes and put in garbage cans. Would you throw all your old letters, invoices, statements, e-mail messages in a magazine of public and put a sign on it to say "Personal Data – Get It Here", I would not.
So do not just track data on media and backups, but proper disposal, clean data where possible and destroy the media that do not. Remember also that most of the media such as CD's now can be recycled, including after grinding.
Note that you ever add DVD CD – you could lose an eye, using an appropriate paper shredder.
When I have not had the time or facilities for customers to clean the hard drives I have open, and then toured the area with a rag. I even bent and units removable hard disk, where data have been very sensitive, a financial offer for corporations. Be careful, some hard drives are actually coated glass, try almost double that explode in the face, not nice!
My advice is to use software for the purpose of deleting data, or for a profession, trust company to dispose of the data.
