itunes database location

How can I copy my iTunes library to my computer after a reformat?
So my computer has been giving me a lot of problems lately and it looks like it’s due up for its yearly reformat. My iTunes library is made up of a couple thousand songs stored entirely on my external hd. Last year when i reformatted, I went through each and every folder to drag individual songs into iTunes and it took a good 2 weeks to complete before I was finished and there is no way I’m doing that again. The only thing I know about is “consolidate library” but all that does is merge everything into one folder. I’m trying to keep everything organized on my drive.
So here is my question: Is there some type of database file that I can find or create in order to drag into the new iTunes that will keep all the info from my files (mainly directory locations) so that it makes this whole process a “one click and you’re done” type of deal? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Find the folder on your hard drive that contains the “iTunes Music Library.xml” file and backup that file and the “iTunes Music Library.itl” file (or the enture iTunes folder if you wish). These files contains the file names and location of your music files. Once you reformat and reinstall iTunes, you can replace the default iTunes copy with these.
