Tax Preparation Application
This seems to be the weakest point for Linux home PC. No there really an alternative to Linux, for residents of the U.S., Intuit's popular TurboTax or H & R Block TaxCut. The only option seems to be to run Internet Explorer 6 using CodeWeavers CrossOver Linux.
Entertainment and communication applications
Amarok is a Linux music player. Amarok will also synchronize music to your iPod. MPlayer is a video player like Windows Media Player. F-Spot, developed by Novell, is a photo editor. Ekiga is a voice and video conferencing application, also known as a softphone. While Skype for Linux is open source, you can download for free.
Utilities
Brasero and K3b are CD / DVD Writers. 7-Zip is a Zip / Unzip application. Although Adobe Acrobat Reader is not open source, is available for Linux and is free. Similarly, Adobe Flash Linux is available for free as well. Clam AntiVirus you can consider along with its graphical front end, ClamTk.
Sometimes it's TINA (There Is No Alternative)! Some people have found the following as a 'must have' Windows applications:
- Photoshop
- Quicken
- iTunes
- Many games
For running Windows applications on Linux, you can taste the wine of open source. If not, you need to buy CodeWeavers CrossOver Linux.
Browser-based applications
You have more and more applications running in a web browser now. By email, Use Google Gmail, Yahoo Mail or Microsoft's Hotmail. All offer calendar, address book and other PIM features as well. Google Google Docs, ThinkFree and Zoho offer office suite in a browser. Just as online versions of Intuit Quicken and QuickBooks are available.
Try the open source applications in Windows first
To make your migration to Linux softer, select the applications you use most often download the source version Windows open and test them first. At a minimum, you should test the web browser, email and office application.Â
