IPod Touch – just short of perfection

This review could be the summer in one short sentence: You are looking at the actual murderer device for personal entertainment. But never, never make brief reviews … So here is the long history. Grab a cup of coffee, as this review answers questions you never knew existed.

I have to admit there have been some articles that have captured and maintained my enthusiasm for the time that the iPod Touch (I will call the iPod touch iPod touch). Two years ago, I bought the original iPod Touch, last year I updated the iPod Touch 32 GB, and now I have the iPod Touch 64GB version. Was the upgrade worth it? What what are the things that have not been improved? Because although the touch is almost perfect, there are still many small things that can be improved.

Hardware
Physically, the new 64GB iPod Touch is identical to that which is the second generation siblings. Crome is polished plate is slightly curved so it fits perfectly palm his hand. As before, the fact that is made of polished chrome ensure that attracts fingerprints and scratches almost magically. I am not fond of any covered protective, and my iPod Touch 32 GB last had to live in your pocket with keys, coins and other things I threw it.

After a year, the board is chosen after a lot of scratches, and I hope the iPod Touch 64 GB to fare no better. Personally, I would have preferred a brushed finish of the backplate. This could have caused problems with the reading of personalized engraving that Apple applied to the touch in the back plate, at no additional charge (a good "touch" that is becoming increasingly important as the iPod Touch is more pervasive). This custom engraving that you can only get if you order the Touch through Apple (which is also available Apple stores).

The faceplate is made of one of the most impressive gains of glass I've ever seen. After a year of heavy abuse, iPod Touch at my old glass has a scratch – not one. I do not know how Apple does, but this is really impressive. Remember, do not use covered A protective film. The screen itself is bright, shiny, and can be easily read outside, which is a feat in itself. The iPod Touch has an ambient light sensor, so you can turn off the screen when the environment is darker.

This time, the color temperature of the screen has remained unchanged (2G changed all colors a bluish tint to a more golden.) movie playback is simply amazing. The image is sharp and natural on-screen controls. Again, there are subtleties such as double tapping the screen to change the aspect ratio, or put markers etc still can not set the contrast of a film, but beyond that issue small movie playback is perfect. Viewing movies on the iPod Touch, just works fine, but I personally think that the screen is too small for a full movie. Last week, I tried to watch a television episode during a flight to Hamburg route (one flight of 75 minutes) but quickly decided against it, opting instead to play a game of Luxor. " Somehow I prefer a larger screen for video consumed while I have no problem doing something interactive on it. However, large video plays on the iPod Touch.

Button and interface lay-out continues being the same as the last generation: the volume controls on the left side, top of the output '/ on the button ", button and connector has spring phone, and the front holds the start button only. One thing that can be improved here: I would have preferred the audio connector to be at the top (or both sides), because the configuration will preclude the use of many applications (eg, news readers and electronic books) when you want to put in vertical position – for example, in the gym. Some applications make use of accelerometers and you can use the iPod Touch in reverse position, however.

The built-in speaker has not changed since the last version. It is weak, tin, monkey, produces a horrible sound, no volume to speak of – and yet is one of the best complements the iPod Touch (the original did not have it, the second generation did). It just makes casual games more fun. I do not care the bad sound quality, I love the fact that it is there.

The signatories white earbuds that Apple ships with the iPod Touch may look good, but I do not like. In my ears are too uncomfortable. Since I'm not an audiophile, I can not comment on its audio quality is good enough for me. However, the replaced it with my favorite version is not Apple. The hitch here is that Apple is now offering iPod Touch 64GB (and 32GB) with headphones that sport a built-in microphone and remote control. And my head phones do not have that. While the remote is not much to write home about (the way they work is too complex), well it works microphone, and just right to choose fidelity voice over background noise. So, for now, I'm white buds with me in case I want to use telephony features IP.

Battery life seems to have declined somewhat from the iPod Touch 2nd generation – at least on paper. During the last days of the New iPod Touch 3rd generation certainly performed as well as or even better than my iPod Touch 2nd Generation – but then, that a battery is already a year old. A fact that I've become very fond of fast charge capability, which works really well.

The built-in wireless connectivity is very nice, with the surprisingly well-executed integration. The iPod Touch has all the wireless networks via WiFi and Bluetooth. WiFi works very well (especially here in Switzerland, where Hotspots are particularely very dense), and the integration of Bluetooth (I've tried in the iPod Touch 3rd generation for the first time) is impeccable. WiFi reception (range) is slightly behind a Wintel laptop (no doubt due to the metal plate) and is more or less on par with a 15 "MacBook Pro (which is also a lacking both reception range Wi-Fi). WiFi is still the 'g' but the variant [interestingly, the built-in hardware supports 11n, but so far Apple has chosen not to activate, presumably to save power. This is interesting also from the fact that the 2nd Generation iPod Touch, Apple initially included Bluetooth capabilities, but only when triggered by a subsequent release of the operating system. Perhaps the same can be expected from 11n]. Now also works with Bluetooth headsets BT car kits and inclusive (it works fine on mine). I would love to try the BT-based printing of the Calendar or Address Book, but with an obstacle, do not seem to iPod Touch application supports printing …

Lack of hardware
There is some hardware that I expected, or whishes to be included in the iPod Touch – especially as (some) of them are present in other iPods:

No camera. Was a rather ambivalent about it. No means no camera and / or movies. But it also means that I can keep handling raw and do not have to worry about of the lens. Also, I do not have to worry about taking to the gym (my gym has very strict rules to appliances equipped with cameras). Being equal, the addition of a camera (still and / or video) is okay, but I did not miss much (actually, I still have to use the camera on my phone mobile).

Unfortunately, there is also no built-in microphone. This is far more important omission which did not have a camera. The iPod Touch is a recorder voice-class audio and (most importantly for me) a class of first Skype client. There are third party solutions for this (a mini-bus that directly connects to headphone jack), but if the iPod Touch had a microphone, would be the use of world-class applications such as Shazam (and Skype), so much more easy.

Similarly, no compass, no GPS receiver gift in touch. I understand that these are left out to better differentiate the iPod Touch than the iPhone but I would have welcomed them at the top of the line-(64 GB) version of the iPod Touch.
And finally, there is no receiver. I definitely is not a man radio, as I never listen along. However, some people do (as well a ton of applications sales of radio IP), and anyway, the Nano has now – even with a pause function Tivoesque nice! Why not the iPod Touch? Strange design choice.

iPod & ITunes
The strength of the original iPod was the incredible ease of use bright – and touch-based interface was a milestone in the improvement in this regard. To date There is simply no better no multimedia interface than that of the iPod Touch / iPhone. It is natural that after a few seconds. It is drop-dead beautiful, with muted highlights and ably accentuated by small (if striking) animations that convey the different metaphors of the interface (for example, rubber bands rebound when the end of a playlist). Since there is an interface immediately before using it to perform even the most complex tasks with the touch of a finger. Its use is simple, fun total. Coverflow browsing of album can be one of the least useful, but it's definitely the most natural (and fun) to turn even the music. Y is the open mouth droppingly well done (note: when using coverflow make sure you have installed the cover of all any type of music has not purchased from the iTunes Store).

At the bottom of all iPods play music is the playlist, and use playlists on the iPod Touch is a joy. The interface and playing well is ripe, the subtleties offered as showing lyrics of a song in one touch, along with the unique simple controls for playback and playback random. Unfortunately, this playlist feature also remains one of the most obvious shortcomings: the iPod Touch is not able to play groups playlist. Usually best group of a bunch of songs in playlist very short (eg, '10 Springsteen), and then playlist mix these into larger ones simply by placing a playlist in a group. Although iTunes is compatible with this, all versions of the iPod Touch have stubbornly refused to do so.

Also strangely absent from the key is the ability to search an artist or music title. Given the fact that more than 10,000 songs fit into the device from the need for an ability to search for something that seems obvious (note: the touch * * does not have a search feature Overall, it will also turn to songs – along with the contacts and emails that match your search phrase. Having quit the application simply to iPod search for a song is everything and the ease of use Apple is about, and not what I expected). And while we're at it, I'd love the ability to search also letters, but that would be the icing on the cake.

What is present, and what continues to amaze me is a function that initially dismissed as a way sell track: Genius Playlists. What makes a song is that because you find other songs that already have to play very well together. Since I have a lot songs (if not, would not be buying the 64 GB), this feature has helped me to get an incredible amount of joy over my music. There are plenty of hidden gems that the mass of music I never knew he had. Of course, if desired, Genius will also recommend songs you do not have, but you can get right now in iTunes. That, of course, is the song to sell "angle. But at least it's incredibly well-executed (and yes, I have used)

The iPod Touch 64GB now also supports voice recognition – and I'm sure it's a marvel of technology. But (like the auto-correction of text) that mostly only works in English. If you have set the German system, must pronounce the names of English band as they were read aloud by a German-only speaker. Do once, and everyone in the room looks at you. Never do it again. In addition, due to the greater complexity of the German language (I speak German), commands only work the half the time. A good idea, and a great help when driving or writing. * * But only when it is set to English.

Rounding out the feature set audiovisual T is the iPod Touch 's presentation capacity, it really shows the interface of gesture-based iPod Touch. It was nip and gesture film originally I sold the iPod Touch, and still does today. On the Mac, iTunes links in the management of the image in iPhoto, greatly easing the task order to synchronize images with your iPod (on windows, this task is a little more pedestrian, as you will have to manually manage the folder "My Pictures"). A strange whim, however, during synchronization is that iTunes seems to decrease the resolution of your images to a (unknown to me, but definitely) one size small. As I am a photo nut (DSLR photography) this "feature" bugs me a little, as iTunes currently offers no means to control downsampling of photos.

The success of the original iPod has left some competitors scratching their heads, while obvious to most of users: the close integration seamlessly with iTunes. Now in version 9, iTunes has become somewhat complex and not always as intuitive to use. Now also try to overcome the photos and videos as well as music and applications. But iTunes is still very easy to use, and synchronize your iPod Touch with iTunes is fast and simple. A small disappointment is the fact that we still can not sync your iPod Touch wirelessly, and still refuses to mount as an external drive. Another disappointment is that but iTunes now allows you to share your music via the web with multiple Macs can not transmit your music to the Touch (A small bright application the AppStore can do this for you, though).

And while we're talking about iTunes – is a feature that I would love to keep in touch: the display. iTunes visualizer is really beautiful, and I would like the same functionality on my touch.

Internet
While by itself the iPod Touch is an amazing device and funny, real swing enters when connected to the Internet. The always-on nature and elegant handling of connection drops, the Touch iPod Internet devices that I used to day. Includes Safari browser makes great – unless you try to load Flash-based content, which is not compatible. The email client works great for receiving and viewing mail. Write all but the shortest-mail is annoying, as the iPod Touch is simply too small to fit comfortably a significant amount of text. Calendar and Address Book are well made (although entering a new date and the combination of multiple calendars is a bit more complicated than necessary). E-mail, calendar and address book can (if you have that service available) live mobile synchronization to either me (that Apple loves to sell) or Exchange (for your employer to force you love) through a feature which is very similar to the "push" notification. In the past, the use of Exchange has been somewhat irregular, and Mobile Me has had its own share of problems. In summary, though both work nice, fast and heavy. You need to be in the range of an access point for this to work, however. Somewhat disappointing is the fact that the notes are not synchronized. Another nice addition is "Voice Memo" which is an audio recorder. If the iPod Touch an internal microphone, this application would have been even better …

Applications
Next to the "productivity" or "suite PDA" (Mail, Calendar, Contacts) the iPod Touch comes with some other good (but a bit boring) applications (eg, maps, stocks, YouTube) and two killer applications: iTunes and App Store. While the former gives you instant access to all the songs and movies that are currently available in iTunes (Note: that in addition the incredible 'Shazam' spending can lead to gross unintented music), the latter (App Store) does not care instant access to an incredible number of applications that can immediately download and use.

The quality of the applications on the App Store is very uneven, and tends to cluster around certain themes quite childish (like a real, uh, lots of applications Fart test). That said, there are a number of applications of the jaw droppingly good that they can Use iPod Touch interface (and other capabilities such as the accelerometer) in new and surprising. Just to name a few are the aforementioned 'Shazam' that can identify a song being played, and instantly link to iTunes (you have to see it in action to believe it), Flight Control, which operate an airport Drawing on the flight path for each aircraft, Bloomberg provides securities information in a comprehensive manner, and shows Wemlin an updated schedule for when the tram arrived at my station. No matter what probably is an application that helps her.

And then there are the games. Apple has acknowledged quickly the iPod Touch platform represents an immensely attractive and powerful game. Performance, display, connectivity and control capabilities make it the ideal platform for games casual. Consequently, the Olympics are by far the largest category in the App Store. Although inevitably there are some really executed, or simply games mate most of the available games are at least some entertainment, while some rivals and exceed those that can be had for three times the price in the platforms dedicated game.

In the past, my iPod Touch is quickly filled with the application after a few who simply could not live without, and a limitation Design contingency iPod Touch surface: application management. Applications are prepared in the form of icons in a 4×4 grid page, several pages that you can film the left and right to navigate. Unfortunately, re-organization of the applications, although it is possible (and very cleverly applied) remains a challenge. Apple has done the right thing, and integrated a manager application much more pleasant in the (PC / Mac) iTunes.

Improvement speed
The iPod Touch, though considered by some as the "younger brother of the iPhone was always either as opment as the telephone, or even more fast. The new iPod Touch 3rd generation is said to be "up to 50% faster" than the previous generation. To be honest, I'm not sure to see that translate improvent speed to increase performance so much. This may be due to the fact that my iPod Touch rarely maxes out the processor or performance (eg When shipping) are the bandwidth of Wi-Fi is the limiting factor. Some applications appear to be 'agile' during boot (smaller applications) or performance (games, mostly), but all in all, the iPod Touch seems to be almost as fast as the last generation. This leads me to believe that the real bottleneck is the memory of the internal implementation (ie, not the 64 GB of storage, but the memory of the processor), and the applications written specifically ony to exploit new technologies (eg, OpenGL ES). Or in other words, the overall speed has been improved so much.

SDKs
So you want to be a geek? You are? You can write your own applications for the iPod Touch, if you want. I took the plunge and download the SDK. Note that you can download the SDK and develop for the iPod Touch / iPhone without owning one. The development system comes with an iPhone simulator that you can use to test their applications without to download them an actual device (which has some limitations: for example, accelerometers are not simulated, and no indication of the actual execution speed). Well, you do not need a Mac for this (although it may be a couple of years). The SDK is amazing – overwhelming, even if you are new to Mac programming (And almost prohibitively complex if not used for frameworks such as cocoa and object-oriented programming). However, crunching out its first (very basic) is surprisingly easy application, and if you take that way, you will get addicted quickly.

Abstract:
Murderer is the entertainment device personal. Buy it. You know you want it – especially if you've read this far. If you have the iPod Touch 2nd Generation, you may need to ask if speed at once mild and extra storage is worth the hefty price tag. For me it was, but your mileage may vary.

professional
world class + iPod Touch / gesture interface
+ IPod best audiovisual experience in everything (music, video, photos)
+ Feature murderer: Application Shop and application availability
+ Murderer feature: the integration of Internet (browsing and technology push)
Playing movies + large
Truth + casual games good device
+ Improved speed slightly (apparently, only for some games)
+ Great integration with Mobile Me (calendar, mail sync) or Exchange
+ SDK really good if you're geek enough to roll your own applications

cons
– No integrated microphone (headphones have them)
– Polished chrome backplate (I would have preferred a brushed finish)
– No GPS, camera, compass
– No radio (nano does?)
– No synchronization of notes, no wireless sync music / movies
– Recognition irregular voice in languages other than English
– No control over downsampling of photos
– There is no search function for music within the iPod app
