itunes stores backups

Why the number of downloads 'iTunes Store' exceeded the number of physical album purchases?
It makes no sense. First, you can buy discs that have been compressed into a file of ACC, which means you can buy all the songs in full quality. Second, physical albums cost less in places like the Amazon, and if not, you can buy the album second hand. Finally, you can keep the CD for life with less chance of losing all the songs, like the physical disk acts as a backup. So, why is this? Makes no sense to me. Where / Do you buy your music from?
It's probably because there is a wider range of music in iTunes you may not store values such as hard lesser known artists or indie bands.
