I can not download itunes because I have Windows ME, so how I can download songs for my ipod?

Hello, could you please help me. I just bought a new Ipod nano. I have Windows Millennium Edition. So how I can download Itunes, only works with Windows 2000. Is it possible to songs downlaod free itunes? Please give me step by step instructions please. When I connect the iPod to my PC = gives a sign that says "do not disconnect." Why? BY GUYS PLEASE help me. I WANT TO DOWNLOAD MY SONGS FROM IPOD TO THIS COMPUTER. Actually, I bought this for my husband's birthday and I want to fill with songs before I give it.
