Mac desktop flash !!!!! HELP!?

I was working in Illustrator, when it suddenly started flashing my desk, I have an iMac and I never encountered this problem before. I can not access files located on my desktop, if I try to open an application, for example, an illustrator, but it seems that works, but here are all flashing, I can not empty the trash, I can open iTunes and it works fine (a blink in the finder bar at the top is from iTunes Finder constantly) I tried a DVD, even, and that works well too. I can not access my Disk Utilities repair or at all. Just blinks and if I double click in a folder on my desktop that can not process anything for the flashes. Can anyone help? I have no CD to fix anything. I even tried to hold the key shift after a reboot, and I have to restart manually. Help!
